Important Information:

The career center is on the move- literally on the move since we are not in our new space as of yet. However we are trying to reach our students with applicable career, college and work-based learning information. College and University representatives will be visiting RNE and will continue do so throughout the fall. Please see Mrs. Sanders for specific dates and schools. In addition, college trips will offered for Juniors and Seniors. Be sure to listen for more details and trips coming soon.

The career specialists Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Hoyle, will be helping students identify career clusters of interest by utilizing the SC Pathways for interest and skills assessments. Also, career lunches will begin. Members of the local business community will speak to groups of students periodically. Listen to the Morning News Show for career lunch opportunities and career cluster topics. Be sure to visit the career specialists’ webpage for more information on college and career events at RNE, featured careers, and links to other useful career sites.

Students also have the opportunity to job shadow; they should see Mr. Sumter, the work-based learning coordinator to discuss the various options. Students can see Mr. Sumter for handouts on cover letters, resumes, and job interviewing. In addition, he is featuring a job tip of the week on the Morning News Show. If there are any questions about college, career, and work opportunities, please call or come to the career center, Career Central.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I begin looking for scholarships?

A: It is never too early to begin looking for ways to pay for college. There are a variety of resources available and there are even a few scholarships available for students prior to their senior year. Begin by looking at scholarships available now. Join the scholarship email list, look in books, read the newspaper, search the internet. There are several resources on the college and career website to help you get started

How can I best position myself to receive college scholarship money?

A: Begin by taking the most rigorous course schedule that you are capable of. This is a decision to be discussed between parents, students, and the student's guidance counselor. Doing well in a rigorous college prep curriculum is one of the best things a student can do to get money. Getting involved in a few activities and developing leadership within those activities is also important. A third way is to get involved in community service. Students can do well by using their talents to better their community. Do the service often and well. Many community service scholarships ask for students that have performed 100 hours or more in a particular area.

What if my grades aren't strong? Is their money for me?

A: As stated earlier, good grades are important, but they aren't the only means of getting money. There are many scholarships that require essays. These may have fewer applicants because they take more work to complete. If you are willing to put the time in to write an excellent essay, there may be money for you.
