Northeast Today - Morning News Show (MNS)

MNS Producers: Julia Blachman and Elyse Kriegshaber

The MNS was born ten years ago when all classrooms were equipped with televisions. The MNS airs on every day but Wednesdays due to late start. The fourteen minute program focuses on school information, activities, and events. News anchors present schoolwide announcements while guests regularly include Principal Ralph Schmidt, the Student Body President and Vice-President as well as other student leaders. It advertises PCA programs like plays, dance programs, and band, orchestra, and vocal concerts. The MNS is a great way to find out the latest sports scores. In addition, each daily program features video packages and clips about a variety of school events.

With changes in the TV studio for this year, we are adding an interview area for live and taped interviews. We will have a daily feature: Monday is a look at what news events are making headlines from our community or across the state, nation, or globe, especially related to environmental issues; Tuesday will we will focus on entertainment – the newest CDs, DVDs, movies, books, and local events that the Cavaliers might be interested in; Thursday is for Student Government update; and on Fridays the sports update. We will have a TV behind the anchors that will run logos and clips. We will now have 5 sets: anchor desk, interview area, large stand-up area, small stand-up area, and glass desk for internet use on the program. The control room is where the program originates from the Video Toaster or Tricaster Studio. We plan to add a green screen for use over the single stand-up area (rigged to move up and down) and a Whisper Room for audio production.

Northeast Today is totally student produced and has the same time restrains as a real news room. The MNS production requires the students develop the script for the program, taking schoolwide information from our email account and adding in the interviews and video productions which make for an exciting show. The program requires the services of 12 students each day. In the control room, there is the producer, audio engineer, computer operator, switcher, and graphics controller. In the studio, there is the floor manager, 2 – 3 camera operators, the teleprompter operator, and the news anchors.

Other Video Productions

Media journalism students also produce a number of annual programs for the school. The school year begins in August with a two part program introducing the school and its administration, guidance department, student government and Information and Technology Center as well as the Rules and Regulations each student needs to know. Students also produce programs for orientation on academics and activities. The other major production is for school elections where students have a chance to meet students running for Student Body and class offices. HOPE for the Holidays is a major production for the broadcast and multi-media students that tape numerous activities related to this program. Experienced students will also be producing segments for the district cable access channel and the new Time Warner channel.

Cavcast – Our Podcast

Editors: William Dye and Evander Manning

Our newest program is podcasting school events. Cavcast, a every other week vodcast, will feature what has gone on that week and what is coming up the next week. A seven - ten minute show will have video packages and clips from the week’s MNS and interviews with guests. The show focuses on two major events – one school related and one sports related for each podcast.
