Horizon Faculty

Susan Baumann, Ed.D. Dr. Susan Baumann has an undergraduate degree in Social Studies Education and graduate degrees in Reading, Curriculum and Instruction. She serves as the Social Studies Department Director and has taught at Richland Northeast since 1981. She began teaching A.P. U.S. History in 1986. Dr. Baumann has been awarded fellowships to study abroad: Fulbright Summer Seminar in Egypt (American University in Cairo), Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs (Japan), Atlantic Canada Institute (University of Maine), Ottawa and Montreal Institute (Duke University). She has also participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities Institute on Islam (Princeton University) and a National Geographic Teacher Institute (Washington, DC). Dr. Baumann traveled to Kirov, Russia in 1995 and 1997 to adopt her oldest two children.

Lindsay Nadel Rabin, M.A. Lindsay Rabin is a proud graduate of Richland Northeast High School. She earned her Bachelors in American Political Science from the University of Georgia, as well as her Masters Degree in American Political Science from the University of Georgia. After working on several political campaigns, as well as a brief stint in Washington, DC working as a lobbyist, she moved with her husband to Augusta, Georgia. She taught two years at Harlem High School. She has taught for the past four years at Richland Northeast in the Horizon Program. She enjoys working with students, building relationships with students, and getting students prepared to ace their AP Exam. Outside of school, she can be found with her family, friends, and cute dog, Knish.

Dean Roof, Ph.D. Dr. Roof completed his BA in English from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia; his Master’s degree in English from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.; and his Ph.D. in Secondary Education with a concentration in English from the University of South Carolina. Initially active in student activities, he devotes most of his time to professional development and serves on various school and district committees. He helped begin the Horizon Magnet Program in 1992 and taught English I for several years. In 1999 he began teaching AP English IV Literature and Composition to magnet seniors.

Stephen Stokes

Stephen Stokes, M.A.Tearned his Bachelor of Arts (’99) from the College of Charleston and his Masters of Arts in Teaching (’04) from The Citadel. After teaching for three years in Charleston County he and his family moved to Columbia where he is in his fourth year as a Horizon teacher here at Northeast. He is currently seeking a second Masters degree at the University of South Carolina and serves on the Leadership Team for Smaller Learning Communities as well as Advisor to the National Honor Society. In addition to teaching AP World History for Horizon freshmen, he also teaches AP and CP United States History.

Virginia Tate Virginia Tate teaches both AP Language and Composition and Horizon Research in the Horizon program. She graduated from Columbia College with a BA in English and a minor in education. Additionally she holds a Master’s of Education degree in gifted education from the University of Missouri. In her years at Richland Northeast High School, Ms. Tate has been involved in a number of clubs and organizations and was instrumental in the implementation of the advisory program during the 2009-2010 school year. She has also served as the common reader for the Horizon Project for several years. Ms. Tate also teaches English 3 CP and HSAP Prep.
