On Tuesday, February 26th, the student body gathered in the auditorium to celebrate Black History month. The students were entertained by the PCA dancers performing three pieces to commemorate the story of the Underground Railroad, including dancing to traditional songs like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” The entire PCA dance troupe then performed a vibrant and colorful African dance that made the audience dance and clap along. “I thought the African dance was the best part because it showed so much of the color and energy of the culture,” said senior Annikka Washington.

The SEARCH club worked for weeks to coordinate the assembly, under the guidance of media specialist Wanda Brown. Their special guest speaker was Ms. Lakeyta Bonnette, who has done extensive research in black culture and politics. Ms. Bonnette and Principal Ralph Schmidt talked to the students about the importance of having plans for the future and how to set and achieve goals in the face of obstacles and adversity.
